About

Indigo Door Project Inc.

Family By Family We Build Communities

IDP was founded by a pregnant, displaced, single mother of a 3-year-old child. Every evening before falling asleep she would imagine the home she and her children would share. A home with a huge backyard, lots of light, and a big beautiful blue door that invited neighbors to come play, talk, eat and feel the warmth of their home. While navigating difficult, and complex systems for 3 years and finally gaining some stability because of the kindness and mentorship of others, she founded Indigo Door Project Inc., so no other parent would have to struggle in isolation.

We want to turn that blue door, that stood as a symbol of hope for the founder and her children into the first door homeless and displaced mothers and fathers all over the Oklahoma City Metro, see as a newly housed family in a supportive community, thus, enhancing health outcomes.

Our Why

The Mission

Ignite community momentum to end child homelessness in metro single-parent families.

Slug: Family by family, we build communities.

Our Values

We want all family members to feel they belong and are seen, and empowered, to meet their highest potential for the benefit of the whole community!

We value mentorship, education, and support as a vehicle of sustainable growth and sufficiency. We envision a state where no child of a single-parent family or kinship ever has to experience homelessness, displacement, or isolation in their community.

Slug: No family should feel alone in a community filled with people.

Tell the stories of single parents and their children, while guiding them to the brighter side of hope.

Slug: From hope to home.

The Goals

  1. Accept and rehab donated, uninhabitable/neglected, and acquired properties and provide families with affordable, supportive, clean, healthy rentals.
  2. Create family-friendly developments and renovations that make life more manageable for single-income families with high needs. Allowing them to be the best parents they can be.
  3. Reduce single parent family isolation and disconnected communities through parent mentorship programs, outreach, and neighborhood events; that support vulnerable families.

Our Vision

We envision a state where no child of a single-parent family ever has to experience, homelessness, displacement, or isolation. In this way, we hope to enhance positive parenting and community health outcomes.

Housing

HOME

Renovate donated or low-cost homes in the community to provide homeless and displaced single parents and their children with beautiful housing in supportive communities.

The W + C

Renovated small co-living apartment space for women and their children that need more support following their bout with homelessness and displacement. This multifamily property will have on-site, mother-led child care, and community events. It acts as a microcosm of the greater community into which they will transition. We are seeking a donation of a complex, 30 units or more to renovate for this purpose.

The D + C

Renovated, multifamily, co-living for fathers and their children to provide additional support to families following their bout with homelessness. The small property will have on-site child care. A space run by dads, for dads and their kids. On our co-living properties, parents will receive financial literacy to help them manage a household on one income while progressing steadily towards their goals. We are seeking a donation of a complex, 25 units or more to renovate for this purpose.

Re-House

Re-House, our prison re-entry program for incarcerated parents due for release and eligible to resume visitation with their children. This program supports re-entry populations for 6 months prior to release with parenting skills classes, and Wrap Groups to prepare them mentally to manage their emotional states as well as be a supportive presence for their children. They receive a studio apartment, job skills training, and community-building skills at beautification events, or through mentors. We are seeking a donation of a complex, 20 units or more to renovate for this purpose.

Events

Thrive Drive

Annual education and health event that benefits students, teachers, and the community. This event collects school supplies for teachers and raises funds to send high school seniors to college during the course of a 2-day farm-to-table produce and culture festival. Chefs, recipes, and pay-by-plate community dinners will introduce healthy food in a meaningful way.

Indigo Gala

Our fundraising gala raises dollars for home acquisition and renovation. Here we share family stories and successes from the previous year and provide exciting packages for vacations and experiences for attendees and their families. Each package represents a monetary donation to the organization that helps house families and or prevents housing destabilization.

Neighbor-to-Neighbor

Community members repair the homes of grandparents raising grandchildren while providing case management to meet the guardian and child/children’s needs while their home is being repaired in this tri-annual 3-day event. We are always seeking rugged, talented, people who take pride in their work to help with these programs throughout the year.

Family Holiday Celebrations

Indigo Door Project will put on various events for kids to help reduce the financial burden on parents and bolster community support.
